The Canal Room on West Broadway in the NYC was the place to be, as an event billed as “A New Era In Roots Reggae” presented by VP records carried a vibe so strong you could almost smell it.
Dwayne Stephens, Etana, Tarrus Riley and I-Wayne all on hand for the hotte-than-hot show which began at 10:45pm on the night of Tuesday, October 16. DJ Roy was the official master of ceremonies for the night and he did a great job of keeping the show flowing. A live band made things sizzle that much more with the clear and vibrant sounds they provided for each performance.
The majestic Etana looked dazzling in a black top and green and black matching skirt. She delighted the crowd with the song “What You Gonna Do”, then demolished the place with “Wrong Address”smooth refreshing voice. Be on the look out for her!
The event also featured Tarrus Riley, who has music royalty in his blood. His father Jimmy Riley is a Roots Reggae legend. Tarrus himself has penned two classics of his own this year so it came as no surprise that he absolutely leveled the Canal Room.
Tarrus blazed things up with “She’s So Royal” which received ‘nuff forwards. He demonstrated his understanding of world affairs with the cut “Babylon Do You Hear”. Tarrus finished up his set with the ballad “Stay With You”.
I-Wayne was last to touch the stage and he gave it his full hundred. His interaction with the audience was expert. He knew what they wanted to hear and when they wanted to hear it. He belted out an anti bowcat tune that tore the place down. He then boomed down the place with the classics “Satisfy Her”, “Living In love”, and “Level Ground”, to the crowd’s delight. Before leaving the stage he performed “Book Of Life” from his forthcoming album.
